What is my treasure? My friends or family? Of course they are important for me, but today I’m going to talk about this picture.

　In February, we had our school marathon and we had to run 8.5 kilometers. It was very long and I was not good at running, so I decided to run every day. I had three weeks before the race. I began to run along the river near my house after school. At first I ran fast, but soon I got tired. Then I ran slowly to the turning point. Around there, I saw an old man. Every day, he sat on one of the benches there and drew a picture.

　One day, after one week passed, I felt so tired and sat on one of the benches for a long time. Then the old man came to me from another bench and said,“ Are you OK?” I said,“ Yes, but I feel so tired. I have practiced for our school marathon since last week, but I can’t do it any more.” The old man smiled and said, “I see. I know you do very well every day. Look at this picture.” I looked at the picture. It was the picture of a boy. He was running along the river. The old man said,“ This is you. I can’t finish it if you stop running. I believe you can do it!” I was so glad to hear his words. Someone was watching me! That made me happy. I said to him,“ I will do my best. So please show me the picture when you finish it.” That day changed me and I really wanted to reach the goal.

　After that day, I didn’t stop running or sit on the bench. I waved to the old man and he cheered me on. Two more weeks passed. The day of our school marathon came. The race began. When I felt tired during the race, I remembered the old man and his picture. I kept running. Finally, I reached the goal! After the race, I went to see the old man and said“Thank you” to him. He said, “I’m so glad! You did a really good job! I also finished my picture.” Then he gave this picture to me.

　Look at me in the picture. I am running hard. When I see it, I always feel I won’t give up anything. This picture taught me an important thing : Never give up. So this is my treasure.Thank you for listening.

　ぼくの宝物は何か。友人または家族？　もちろん彼らもぼくにとって大切ですが，今日はこの絵について話そうと思います。

　２月に校内マラソン大会があり，ぼくたちは8.5キロメートルを走らなくてはなりませんでした。とても長い距離で，ぼくは走るのが得意ではないので，毎日走ることにしました。レースまでは３週間ありました。ぼくは放課後に家の近くの川沿いを走り始めました。最初は速く走りましたが，すぐに疲れてしまいました。それから折り返し地点までゆっくり走りました。その辺りでぼくは一人の老人を見かけました。毎日，彼はそこにあるベンチの１つに座って絵を描いていました。

　１週間が過ぎたある日，ぼくはとても疲れてベンチの１つに長いこと座っていました。するとその老人が別のベンチからぼくのところにやって来て「大丈夫？」と言いました。ぼくは「はい。でも，とても疲れてしまって。ぼくは校内マラソン大会に向けて先週から練習しているのですが，もうこれ以上練習できません」と言いました。老人は微笑んで「そうだね。きみは毎日とてもよくやっているのを私は知っているよ。この絵をごらん」と言いました。ぼくはその絵を見ました。それは一人の少年の絵でした。彼は川沿いを走っていました。老人は言いました。「これはきみだよ。もしきみが走るのをやめたら，私は絵を完成できないんだ。きみならできると私は信じているよ」ぼくは彼の言葉を聞いてとても嬉しくなりました。だれかがぼくを見ていてくれた。それを知ってぼくは幸せな気持ちになりました。ぼくは彼に言いました。「ぼくは最善を尽くすつもりです。だから絵が完成したらぼくに見せてください」その日からぼくは変わり，ゴールしたいと本当に思いました。

　その日から，ぼくは走るのをやめたりベンチに座ったりしませんでした。ぼくは老人に手を振り，彼はぼくを応援してくれました。さらに２週間が経ちました。校内マラソン大会の日がやって来て，レースが始まりました。ぼくはレース中に疲れたと感じると，老人と彼の絵を思い出し，走り続けました。最終的に，ぼくはゴールしました。レースの後，ぼくは老人に会いに行き，彼に「ありがとう」と言いました。彼は「とても嬉しいよ。きみは本当によくやったね。私も絵を完成させたよ」と言いました。そしてこの絵をぼくにくれたのです。

　絵の中のぼくを見てください。一生懸命に走っています。ぼくはそれを見るといつも何事もあきらめないぞと感じるのです。この絵はぼくに大切なことを教えてくれました。けっしてあきらめないということです。だからこれがぼくの宝物です。ご清聴ありがとうございました。
