Today I’m going to tell you about my volunteer work. I’ve been interested in volunteer work since I read a book. I found the book in the library when I was a junior high school student. The book was written by a Japanese man.

　In the book, the Japanese man visited many places all over the world. In a village, children had to walk to a river to get water for their family every day. The river was far from their houses. One day, the children were carrying water, and the Japanese man talked to one of them. He said to the girl, “Do you want me to help you ?” She answered, “Yes, please.” He carried water with her and said, “Carrying water is very hard. It takes a long time. Do you have time to go to school ? ” She said, “No, I don’t. I want to study at school and play with my friends.” He wanted the children to go to school. Then he decided to build the water well and learned how to do it. He asked people in the village to work together. He worked with them for about one year and they built the water well in the village. Then the children could go to school and they became happy. After reading the book, I wanted to do something to help people.

　One day, a teacher in junior high school gave us information about volunteer work with Kita High School students. Two weeks later, I went to Kita High School with some friends. Then we went to a nursing home with the high school students of the volunteer club. It was the first time for me to do volunteer work. I was excited, but nervous. At first, I didn’t know what to do, but the high school students showed it to me. I talked with some elderly people and cleaned some rooms in the nursing home. At lunch time, I found that an elderly woman was eating lunch alone. She looked lonely. So I talked to her and we ate lunch together. We talked about many things each other. When we finished talking, she said, “I had a good time. Thank you.” I was very happy to hear that, so I also said,“ Thank you !” I thought I could do something good for other people. Since then, I have wanted to do more volunteer work.

　今日，私はボランティアの仕事についてみなさんにお話しようと思います。私はある本を読んで以来，ボランティアの仕事に興味を持っています。私は中学生のときにその本を図書館で見つけました。その本は日本人の男性が書いたものでした。

　本の中で，その日本人男性は世界中のたくさんの場所を訪れました。ある村では，家庭の水をくむために子どもたちが毎日川まで歩かなくてはなりませんでした。川は彼らの家からは遠く離れていました。ある日，子どもたちが水を運んでいて，その中の一人に日本人男性が話しかけました。彼はその少女に「私に手伝ってほしい？」と言いました。彼女は「はい，お願いします」と答えました。彼は彼女といっしょに水を運び，「水を運ぶのはとても大変だし，時間もかかるね。学校に行く時間はあるの？」と言いました。彼女は「いいえ，ありません。私は学校で勉強して友達と遊びたいです」と言いました。彼は子どもたちに学校へ通ってほしいと思いました。そして井戸を作ろうと決め，そのやり方を学びました。彼は村の人々にいっしょに働いてくれるように頼みました。彼は村人たちとともにおよそ１年間働き，村に井戸を作りました。それから子どもたちは学校に通うことができ，幸せになりました。この本を読んだ後，私は何か人を助けることをしたいと思いました。

　ある日，中学校の先生が私たちに北高校の生徒たちとのボランティアの仕事に関する情報を教えてくれました。２週間後，私は友人数人と北高校に行きました。それから，ボランティア部の高校生たちといっしょに老人ホームに行きました。私にとってボランティアの仕事をするのは初めてでした。私はわくわくしましたが，緊張していました。最初，私は何をすればよいかわかりませんでしたが，その高校生たちが私にそれを見せてくれました。私は何人かの年配の人たちと話をして，老人ホームの部屋をいくつか掃除しました。昼食のとき，私は一人の年配の女性が一人で食事をしているのに気づきました。彼女はさびしそうに見えました。だから私は彼女に話しかけていっしょに昼食を食べました。私たちはお互いにたくさんのことについて話しました。話し終わると，彼女は「楽しかったわ。ありがとう」と言いました。私はそれを聞いてとても嬉しくて，私も「ありがとう！」と言いました。私は，自分は他人のために何か良いことができるのだと思いました。それ以来，私はもっとボランティアの仕事がしたいと思っています。
